5 Walks to Do in Donegal: From Easy Strolls to Challenging Hikes

Donegal, with its landscape of wild cliffs, sandy beaches and winding rural paths is a walker’s dream. Whether you’re looking for a short riverside stroll or a half-day hike along the Atlantic coast, these five walks capture the natural beauty and peace of Southwest Donegal… and they’re all within easy reach of Carrick Gate. Here are five of our favourites.

1. Carrick River Walk (Easy - 2km)

This gentle walk follows the river as it meanders through the countryside. It’s flat and family-friendly, and will bring you all the way from Carrick Gate to The Salmon Leap, where you can refuel with drinks and snacks from the quirky Brew In Thru coffee van. This is perfect for an early morning walk or wind-down stroll in the evening.

2. Muckross Head (Easy to Moderate - 3km)

One of Donegal’s lesser-known gems, Muckross Head offers dramatic coastal views, wildflower-covered cliffs and a looped walking route that circles the headland. It’s a mix of grass paths and rocky sections - not too strenuous, but enough to stretch the legs. As a wee bonus, you could always soothe your tired muscles in the sea at Muckross Beach afterwards!

3. Silver Strand Beach (Moderate - 4km)

This stunning horseshoe-shaped beach is one of the most iconic in Ireland. Start by descending the famous 170+ steps (not for the faint-hearted) to the strand, then explore the beach before climbing back up and continuing along the clifftop path for sweeping Atlantic views. Golden-hour photographers? This is one for you.

4. Glencolmcille Tower Loop (Moderate to Challenging - 4km)

Starting and finishing at St Columba’s Church in Glencolmcille, this walk offers the best of both worlds: historical landmarks and unspoiled coastal wilderness. Follow a quiet trail uphill to the old Martello Tower at Glen Head and enjoy endless Atlantic views, seabirds wheeling above the cliffs and a peaceful sense of isolation.

5. Sliabh Liag (Slieve League) Pilgrim's Path (Challenging - 6km)

For a more adventurous day out, follow the ancient Pilgrim's Path to the summit of Sliabh Liag, one of Europe’s highest sea cliffs. Starting near the village of Teelin, the route climbs steadily through open hillside and bogland, following a well-worn grassy track. Along the way, take in sweeping views of Teelin Harbour, Lough Agh, and the rolling hills of Glencolmcille.
